Reef Check was established in 1996 in an attempt to create a simple standardised marine survey that can be used worldwide.
Indonesia lies in the heart of the coral triangle and is home to the most bio-diverse waters in the world. Unfortunately fishing methods such as cyanide fishing, dynamiting and long nets along with other human damages.
Our initial visit to the area showed the reefs to be in incredible condition, with beautiful hard and soft corals and a strong juvenile fish population, unfortunately the larger /reef fish, passing mantas, large sharks and dugongs were nowhere to be seen. We established survey sites and conducted our first surveys in the area as well as looked for the local dugong population in an attempt to establish what time of year they are in the area. The long term plan is to tag these dugongs and eventually protect the areas which they migrate to. We will also photograph any manta rays we see and forward this information to Aquatic Alliance, based in Lembongan, to aid in their protection.
The expedition is lead by a highly experienced explorator during 6 days and departs from the beautiful island of Gili Trawangan off Lombok’s North West coast. The 6 days will be spent on board our 66ft Bangka boat. During that time we will conduct surveys on established survey sites and find new sites to survey. We will also look for the local dugong population and work with a local re-population program for leopard sharks, reef sharks and lemon sharks. Of course there will also be time for a few fun dives and a UV night dive.
