On the recommendation of eOasia, my husband and I signed up for the Dajmoe Herbal Drinks Class at Canggu. We had already had an Indonesian cooking class, and we were delighted and intrigued to hear about those traditional all-natural elixir drinks. The whole experience is very special and not to be missed. The class takes place at Hotel Tugu, a stylish place with an intimate feel, more like a museum than a hotel. A beautiful young woman lead us in a small outdoor kitchen, complete with a traditional wood stove, and surrounded by a lush tropical garden. We were given aprons, and presented with the ingredients of the four `jamu' we would prepare : rice, tamarind, turmeric, galangal,
guava leaves, palm sugar, cinammon, lime... The flavours, the presentation, everything was beautiful. Under Kadek's guidance, we spent about 2 hours putting together ingredients, roasting, chopping, dicing, grinding and mixing. Then it was time to strain, to taste, and to drink. The recipes in English are easy to understand, and every
`jamu' should be easily reproduced at home, provided that the proper ingredients can be found. The flow of the class was perfect, with no lags or wasted time. Until the arrival of our taxi, we were invited to stay in the gorgeous living-room style space, cozy and quiet with coffee tables and books. The traditional herbal drinks are said to emit radiant energy in the body : indeed, we felt exceptionally fit and relaxed. Overall, we could not recommend this experience highly enough.
