Though modern times have taken up room in Beijing, this place has managed to stay true to its traditional past. A must-do on your visit to this culturally-rich place is hop on a bike and uncover the winding alleyways and backstreets. Commonly known as the Forbidden City, your tour starts on the winding hutongs (narrow lanes/streets) which are home to many locals, shops, markets, temples and historic buildings. This bike tour gives you an uninterrupted view of the traditional way of life, as you discover neighbourhoods unlike any community you've seen.
Really get into the culture as this tour takes you to Huiling - a community-based NGO for mentally challenged individuals- where you feast on simple Chinese cuisine. Get a chance to make friends as you learn about the work these individuals do to sustain a livelihood.
Hop on your bike and end the tour as you cycle back past the hutongs. By the way, another alternative to experiencing Beijing is by exploring their local food and spices. Feel free to ask your tour guide about this tour that commences at 4pm.
